Mr Alistair Mayne is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee sports injuries and joint replacement surgery.
Mr Mayne graduated as 1st placed student in his year at Liverpool Medical School. He undertook his Specialty Training in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery, initially on the East of Scotland rotation, before returning home to Northern Ireland. During this time, he undertook a Master’s Degree in Clinical Education with Queens University Belfast (Passed with Distinction) and was awarded the Sir Walter Mercer Gold Medal for achieving the highest mark for all sittings of the Trauma and Orthopaedic Fellowship exam (FRCS Tr & Orth) in the UK and Ireland in 2021.
Mr Mayne has a strong interest in clinical research and has presented work nationally and internationally, as well as publishing over 40 research papers in peer-reviewed journals. He has been awarded multiple prizes for his research including the Martin Medal for Orthopaedic Research in Northern Ireland, the British Orthopaedic Association Best of the Best Award at their Annual Congress in 2022 and the British Hip Society/ Bone and Joint Journal Translational Research prize in 2024.
Following completion of higher surgical training, Mr Mayne subsequently undertook two advanced sub-specialty fellowships. The first fellowship was in young adult hip/ hip preservation surgery at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. This involved specialist training in hip arthroscopy (“keyhole” hip surgery), hip resurfacing and complex hip replacements in younger patients, including teenagers.
Mr Mayne and his family then moved to Perth, Western Australia for the prestigious Perth Sports Surgery Fellowship which provided advanced training in sports knee surgery and hip and knee sports injuries. During this fellowship, Alistair underwent comprehensive specialist training in knee ligament reconstruction surgery, meniscal surgery and knee joint preservation surgery.

Alistair is happily married with 2 young children. Personal sporting interests now include running, cycling and water sports. He has a strong interest in sports generally, and actively follows the Ulster and Irish rugby teams.
